Personal Injury Law Firm of the Year – Michigan 2025

For three generations and more than 50 years, the Sam Bernstein Law has stood as pillar of representation of the injured in Michigan while exemplifying what it means to be a family firm.

From its humble beginnings in 1971 as part of shared office space with just Sam Bernstein and a secretary, the firm has expanded to employ nearly 200 people across multiple Michigan locations, including 40 attorneys. The firm’s genesis stems from Sam Bernstein’s early exposure to the legal profession through his father, Mandell, who instilled in him a vision of law as a noble calling dedicated to helping others. That foundational principle has guided the firm’s growth and development into the 21st century. Currently led by siblings and co-CEOs Mark Bernstein and Beth Bernstein Miller, alongside founder Sam, the family-operated practice has evolved into a significant force in Michigan’s legal landscape.

The leadership team maintains a clear focus on client advocacy while adapting to meet contemporary challenges through talent acquisition and resource optimization. Mark works with Beth in the courtroom and communities throughout the state. He serves on the executive board of the Michigan Association for Justice and was elected by leading defense and plaintiff attorneys from across Michigan to serve on the State Bar of Michigan’s Negligence Section Council. He was also recently honored as a fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation and a “Leader in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

Sam Bernstein Law maintains deep community engagement, particularly through their partnership with Volunteers of America Michigan. The firm operates the Call Sam Kitchen, providing three daily meals to homeless veterans in Detroit. Their commitment to veterans’ support has been amplified through a partnership with the Detroit Lions, which has helped generate substantial funding for these initiatives. The firm’s trajectory from its early challenges of building a client base to its current position as a multi-office operation reflects decades of strategic growth and adaptation. Under the shared leadership of Mark and Beth Bernstein, the practice maintains its founding family principles while embracing modern operational approaches and technology.
