Blackstone Chambers has appointed Sapna Jhangiani KC, a distinguished advocate and former Clyde & Co partner, to enhance its disputes capabilities in Asia. Jhangiani, known as the first female lawyer in Singapore to be appointed as a silk in England, brings extensive experience in international arbitration and litigation.
With a career spanning more than two decades, Jhangiani has served as a government advocate in Singapore and practiced as a barrister in England and Wales. She was called to the Bars of Singapore, England and Wales, and the British Virgin Islands (BVI), and took silk in 2020. She also served as international legal counsel at Singapore’s Attorney-General’s Chambers and was recently sworn in as a part-time judge of the Court of Appeal of the DIFC Courts.
Jhangiani’s advocacy journey includes roles as vice chair of the International Chamber of Commerce’s Commission on ADR and Arbitration and lead positions in major arbitral committees. She has worked in Dubai, Singapore, and India, providing legal expertise across multiple jurisdictions.
Joint head of Blackstone Chambers, Jane Mulcahy KC, expressed excitement about Jhangiani’s addition, highlighting her skill in arbitration and court advocacy as a valuable asset for the chambers’ offshore practice in jurisdictions like Singapore, India, BVI, Cayman Islands, and Dubai.
Jhangiani remarked on her enthusiasm for joining Blackstone, emphasizing her eagerness to collaborate with the set’s talented barristers to expand its international impact. Harish Salve KC SA, a prominent member of Blackstone Chambers, praised her expertise, noting her formidable capabilities as a top silk in arbitration.
This announcement coincides with leadership transitions at Blackstone Chambers. Senior clerk Gary Oliver is set to retire after 34 years, succeeded by Adam Sloane and Derek Sutton as joint senior clerks. Oliver’s contributions, along with current chambers director Mat Swallow, have been instrumental in the set’s global success.
Jhangiani’s arrival further solidifies Blackstone Chambers’ position as a leading force in international arbitration and dispute resolution.
